A Heartwarming Start to 2024 for Vulnerable Children in Yangon

Yangon, MyanmarThe St. Francis Xavier Church in Thanlyin came alive with joy as 50 children gathered to celebrate a special Happy New Year 2024 gathering. This heartwarming event brought together young souls from vulnerable families for a day of laughter, music, and festive cheer. It was a celebration not only of the holiday season but also of the bright hopes we carry into the coming year. We are especially grateful to Father Nyan Myint, a cherished friend and partner in our mission to support underprivileged youth. His enduring support and warm presence made this gathering even more meaningful. His involvement continues to be a source of inspiration for all who are working to make a positive difference in these children’s lives.

Returning to Thanlyin for another year of celebration fills us with gratitude and strengthens our commitment to continue spreading hope where it’s needed most. Events like this remind us of the joy found in community and the powerful impact of small acts of kindness, especially for those facing hardship.

Little Chefs, Nurturing Social Skills at the Cookout Festival

Organized by the Mary K. Yap Foundation, the inaugural “Little Chef Cookout Festive” took center stage as our newest addition to the array of activities designed to empower and uplift orphaned children within our community.

On December 25, 2023, amidst the festive spirit of Christmas Day, a special event unfolded at St. Francisco Xavier in Yangon, Myanmar, that marked a significant milestone in our social development initiatives. Meme Lwin, the responsible Orphanage Ambassador, and the face behind the Foundation efforts in the country coordinated with 18 volunteers on-site to bring smiles and jubilation to more than 50 children at the San Francis Xavier in Yangon.

The “Little Chef Cookout” program represents a dynamic and engaging approach to social development, specifically tailored for participating youths. This culinary adventure transcends mere cooking lessons, serving as a platform to nurture teamwork, communication, and creativity among the young participants.

Through hands-on cooking experiences, these children learn essential culinary skills and develop vital social skills such as cooperation and effective communication. At the heart of the program is a supportive and collaborative environment where young chefs plan, prepare, and present their culinary creations.

This cooperative effort enhances their culinary expertise and fosters lasting friendships, boosting their confidence and social development in a fun and interactive setting. The master chef behind the “Little Chef Cookout” program is Ma Lay, a volunteer, and a mother of three grown-up daughters. Ma Lay brings a wealth of culinary expertise, having won several championships as a Master Chef from local community contests. Her dedication and passion for cooking inspire and guide the participating youths, creating a rich learning experience for everyone involved.

The overarching purpose of the “Little Chef Cookout” program, spearheaded by the Mary K. Yap Foundation and orchestrated by Meme Lwin and her team of volunteers, is to foster holistic social development among participating youths. By providing a creative and collaborative culinary platform, we aim to empower these children to hone their cooking skills and build essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and confidence.

Through initiatives like the “Little Chef Cookout,” the Mary K. Yap Foundation remains committed to creating meaningful opportunities for social empowerment and talent building among vulnerable children’s communities. This first annual event during major holidays reflects our dedication to creating positive and impactful experiences that contribute to the holistic development of the children we serve.

Beyonce Giselle Knowles

“You determine your self-worth,”

Beyonce Knowles

#

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, famously known as Beyoncé, is one of the world’s most renowned musicians born and raised in Houston, Texas. She was known as the lead singer of the R&B group Destiny’s Child before she embarked on a hugely successful solo career, beginning with the album “Dangerously in Love,” released in 2003 to rave reviews.

The world-famous pop star has been known to produce some of the best songs, with her music ‘Dangerously in Love’ being her best-selling song ever, with 11 million copies sold worldwide! And as of 2020, her net worth is a modest $400 million!

“A true diva is graceful and talented, and strong, and fearless and brave and someone with humility.”

Despite her popularity, Beyonce prioritizes giving back and using her music to inspire and become an influence for the betterment of those around her. She donated $250,000 to provide transitional housing for those affected by Hurricane Katrina as she and a former girl group mate, Kelly Rowland, founded the Survivor Foundation.

Beyonce also stands for feminism, LGBTQ rights, and equality, using her ability to compose songs to empower people, especially those experiencing racism.

Beyonce leaves an empowering message:

“It took me some time. But now I am strong. Because I realized I got. Me myself and I.”

On International Women’s Day, our Foundation would like to credit Beyonce Knowles as a fierce advocate of women’s rights.  With every new song, Beyonce makes herself different by setting an example of what she does.  Passion and inspiration fuel songs by Beyonce.  Beyonce’s songs are not just mere expressions; they give you much more. They make you proud of who you are and give you abundant confidence and motivation, which are lacking in orphanage communities, compounded by children who are young girls that make up more than 50% of the orphan population in places like Myanmar, India, and Pakistan.

TESTIMONIES

Sr. Rose Mary’s Reflection

My name is Sister Rose Mary. I am now assigned to the St. Francis Xavier Convent in Myitkyina, Kachin, in northern Myanmar. I have been serving the ministry little over 40 years.  I was previously assigned to the Myittamone Orphanage in Hwabi in 2015 when I received Mr. Peter K. Yap and his family at our orphanage home.  I’ve known the Mary K. Yap Foundation for seven years now. They are like a family to us. The organization continuously visits and checks on us, especially our children.

As an orphanage organization under the Roman Catholic Church of the Myanmar Diocese, our vision is to bring out the best in our children so they can grow under God’s care and have the necessary skill sets to take on future responsibilities to become reliable adults.

We see these orphans as someone who can turn their futures better. We believe that their past shouldn’t be something that can affect their future. They are just like other children who need someone to depend on and someone who believes in them.

We have been in contact with Mary K. Yap Foundation since 2015. We have done several impactful programs together. We are excited to see and develop joint programs with them whenever they visit our orphanage. We have also participated in the foundation’s “One Stuff Animal Project.” It is a yearly program that focuses on the social connection and development of the children.

The tender love and Care project and their annual foundation Christmas celebration are held yearly. Together with the volunteers, the program aims to allow some time for the orphans to enjoy and celebrate the Christmas season. The foundation organizes and prepares some entertainment, games, and food to share with. I love how happy the orphans were. The smiles on their faces are worth every moment. I know they feel loved and content in these times.

As a lead sister of the orphanage, these orphans are very close to my heart. I feel them every time. I also believe in them. I know they are worth more than their sad history. I know they can be successful one day because, just like the others, they are smart kids that’s why I am one of those people who believe in and support them all the way. I think these children should feel the love and care of someone who truly appreciates them. They are our future; they are worth more.

Mary K. Yap Foundation is truly a blessing for every orphan. I want supporters and donors to know how much the organization appreciates the orphan community. They have a huge heart for these children. The company cares for the orphans like a family. I am one of the biggest foundation’s supporters. I am looking forward to every opportunity for their projects. I hope they can organize more events that the orphans will truly enjoy.

Sprinter Carlin Isles’s Inspiration

There are many stories of successful orphans who became heroes in the sports and entertainment industry.  They made their history by remaining motivated and determined to achieve their life aspirations despite their humble upbringing and difficulties.  Carlin Isles is an example of an individual who struggled during childhood and became famous in sports by becoming the fastest man in Rugby.  As part of our coverage of individual spotlight of successful orphans, below is a snapshot of a person who made a massive impact.

Carlin Isles was born in Massillon, Ohio, on November 21, 1989.   He spent most of his time in his early days since he rarely saw his biological mother when growing up.  Carlin Isles did everything possible to survive, even to the point of eating dog food.  At the age of 7, he was adopted by Starlett and Charles Isles, who treated him like their own and supported him with the stability and love he needed to excel in sports and academics.

While growing up, Carlin Isles ran track and played American football, holding multiple high school track and field records.  Next, he enrolled at Ashland University, where he became an All-American in the 60m dash and ran a personal best of 6.68 seconds, a school record. He also holds freshman class records in the 100m and 200m dash (indoor and outdoor).  Before taking up Rugby in 2012, Isles ranked as the 36th fastest sprinter in the United States with a 100-meter outdoor personal best of 10.13 seconds.

Then, miles Craigwell encouraged him to start playing Rugby, another crossover athlete from American football who played for the United States national team. Isles played club rugby with the Gentlemen of Aspen RFC, based in Aspen, Colorado.

Isles first caught the attention of the rugby media in the summer of 2012 when Rugby Mag dubbed him “The Fastest Man in American Rugby, ” according to (celebsagewiki.com).   Isles played for the US national developmental team Atlantis in July 2012 at the Victoria 7s tournament.  He was a part of the Warriors 7’s side that won the Melrose Sevens in April 2014.  With over 100 tries, Isles ranks third for the United States in career tries scored.

Carlin Isles’s determination and persistence made him a well-known Rugby player.  He ‘didn’t let his past upbringing affect him; instead, he followed his dreams of becoming the best athlete.    Charles Isles’s success today is partly because of the love and care of his adoptive parents, who paved the way for him to have a stable life and fueled him with the support structure.

The Mary K. Yap Foundation salutes all children raised in foster care.  Carlin Isles made the best of his journey by overcoming adversities, believing in himself, and working incredibly hard to surpass all expectations.

Planting Hope: The #FirstSeed Campaign for Orphanage Sustainability

Planting Hope: The #FirstSeed Campaign for Orphanage Sustainability

San Francisco, USA – The Foundation is proud to introduce Campaign 5: #FirstSeed, a vital initiative launched to bring sustainable gardening practices to selected orphanages in Myanmar. This campaign was born out of the desire to create lasting, self-sufficient food sources for vulnerable children, while promoting environmental education and healthy living. By equipping orphanages with tools, training, and support to grow their fruits and vegetables, the Foundation is planting the first seeds of change, literally and symbolically.

The #FirstSeed campaign goes beyond simple crop cultivation. It fosters a deeper connection between children and the land, encouraging hands-on learning and teaching essential life skills such as responsibility, patience, and teamwork. These gardens serve as living classrooms where children not only grow their meals but also grow in confidence and knowledge. Through partnerships with local agricultural experts and community volunteers, the campaign ensures that each participating orphanage receives personalized guidance and long-term support.

As the gardens begin to flourish, so does the sense of empowerment within each orphanage. The produce harvested helps reduce food insecurity and supports daily nourishment needs, while any surplus may be shared with nearby communities or used to fund additional programs. Through #FirstSeed, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to uplifting orphaned children by nurturing body and spirit—one seed, one garden, one future at a time.

#Road2Digital: Bridging Gaps, Brightening Orphaned Lives

Introducing the Mary K Yap Foundation’s #Road2Digital: Bridging Gaps, Brightening Orphaned Lives

The Road2Digital: Bridging Gaps, Brightening Orphaned Lives campaign by Mary K. Yap Foundation is a beacon of hope for disadvantaged children, especially orphans, who often face numerous challenges in accessing quality education and technological resources. This program falls under the Foundation’s “Educational Advancement” initiatives, emphasizing the importance of equipping all orphans with essential computer skills, English speaking skills, and Vocational Training to thrive in today’s digital world.

Through the Road2Digital campaign, the Foundation offers quarterly Basic Computer courses either in physical teaching environments or via Zoom settings, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for selected orphaned children. These courses are designed to empower the children with fundamental computer knowledge, enabling them to navigate computer applications and leverage technology for educational and vocational purposes.

One of the key objectives of this program is to provide a conducive learning environment where orphaned children can familiarize themselves with computers as self-learning tools within the comfort of their orphanages. This approach not only promotes digital literacy but also reinforces the children’s confidence and independence in acquiring new skills despite any post-pandemic barriers to traditional learning methods.

Furthermore, the Foundation believes that equipping these young, orphaned individuals with computer knowledge and internet browsing skills opens a world of opportunities for them. From improving academic performance to accessing job opportunities in the future, the Road2Digital campaign lays the foundation for a brighter and more promising future for these children, empowering them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

In essence, the Mary K. Yap Foundation’s Road2Digital campaign is a testament to its unwavering commitment to education and empowerment, providing disadvantaged children, particularly orphans, with the essential tools and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital-centric world.

High School Diploma Program: Empowering Orphaned Students for a Brighter Future

Revamping the Mary K Yap Foundation’s H.S.Diploma Program: Empowering Orphaned Students for a Brighter Future

The Mary K Yap Foundation is proud to announce the retooling of our transformative H.S.Diploma is known as the High School Diploma program for Empowering Orphaned Students.  The program provides innovative after school educational opportunities to every orphaned student from Grade 9 (age 14) to Grade 12 (age 17) in Myanmar. We have organized this program with our esteemed educational partners to address the critical challenges orphaned children face in accessing quality education.

Challenges Faced and Solutions Offered:

One of the critical challenges in Myanmar is the limited access to educational programs, especially for orphanage populations. This challenge represents a significant barrier to orphaned children’s academic and personal growth, limiting their prospects and opportunities. Our H.S.Diploma program offers comprehensive solutions to this shortfall, including financial assistance, proper guidance, training, and after-school tuition classes. These initiatives aim to mold orphaned students into better individuals, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed academically and socially.

The H.S.Diploma Program gives children the guidance they need to navigate their high school years successfully. By providing increased accessibility to educational support, including after-school tuition classes and personalized advice, we aim to accelerate orphaned students’ academic and social advancement during their last four years of high school (Grades 9 to 12). This extra attention ensures they meet the requirements to graduate from high school and prepares them for the challenges of university education.

Grade 12 is a crucial milestone that opens doors to many opportunities. The Mary K Yap Foundation takes pride in providing comprehensive educational support so orphaned students can concentrate on their studies, excel in their exams, and confidently pursue higher education. Our commitment to success is reflected in our close partnership with participating orphanages, selected orphan students, and our dedicated Foundation team. Regular progress reports are available for sponsors and donors who wish to monitor student performance and track progress throughout the program.

Our Plan of Action:
      • Provide financial assistance for orphaned students to access quality education.
      • Offer guidance, training, and after-school tuition classes to support academic and personal development.
      • Collaborate with orphanages and educational partners to ensure the success of the H.S.Diploma Program.
      • Monitor and track students’ progress through regular progress reports and evaluations.
      • Empower orphaned students by equipping them with essential skills and knowledge for academic success.
      • Advocate for increased accessibility to educational resources and infrastructure in orphanages across Myanmar.
      • Foster partnerships and collaborations with sponsors, donors, and stakeholders to expand our programs.
      • Continuously assess and improve the program to meet the evolving needs of orphanages.

We invite you to join us in this meaningful endeavor. If you know of an orphanage or an orphan student who could benefit from our H.S.Diploma Program, please email us at hello@marykyapfoundation.org. Together, we can empower orphaned students and pave the way for a brighter and more promising future.

Have you ever thought of doing something enriching, never done before that is exceptionally gratifying?  It’s about changing a person’s life forever with one single step.

You can now be part of that life experience by becoming an exclusive ambassador club of the “Sponsor an Orphanage” program.

Orphaned children are most vulnerable.   They need your help the most. They are small children as young as one year old and sometimes even younger than one, who have lost one or both parents.  These youths hope that their lives will be better one day.  You can be part of the special club to bring life-impacting differences!

Orphan children need heroes, champions, someone who will regularly help them, support them, and love them in a way they can.   Regular contribution of little as US$1 a day brings these orphans constant hope that their lives will be better and successful one day.

Mary K. Yap Foundation organizes the “Sponsor an Orphanage” program in which your sponsorship funds can either be singled out to support an individual orphan child or allocate it into a general fund that supports specific empowerment programs for an orphanage.   Once signed up, our team will share orphans’ life stories profile to those who enroll in the “Sponsor an Orphanage” program. In addition, you will be updated on the progress made at the end of the year by directly receiving a letter from the orphaned child or from the headmaster of orphanage who received your donation support.

Sponsoring and building a relationship with an orphanage brings satisfaction, real hope, and a life-affirming experience. It gives the orphaned children life-changing basics like food, clean water, healthcare, and education. These orphaned children need a hero and someone to lean on.

Be that person to bring that change forever.
