Objective:
#EachOneTeachOne – Shaping Future, One Child at a Time – focuses on offering Basic English speaking and writing classes for our orphan youths in Myanmar. As part of the Mary K. Yap Foundation’s ongoing efforts to transform the lives of orphaned children, we’ve organized a program that offers basic English classes from beginning to intermediate to advanced levels for children who may never have the opportunity to learn a foreign language. We provide English-speaking teachers to orphaned children as young as ten and up with English language basics and eventual proficiency in using and understanding the language.
Challenge:
Children are deprived of Education and learning for various reasons. Poverty is the number one barrier to accessing any form of formal Education. Children living through political instability, economic hardships, conflict, or natural disasters are more likely to be cut off from schooling– as are those with disabilities or from ethnic minorities, according to UN reports on Education.
The situation is even more dreadful for orphan communities that are neglected and abandoned where even the fundamental right to an education isn’t a priority. This problem of children in vulnerable communities and entire economies in need missing out on Education was already global even before the COVID-19 pandemic brought education systems to a halt.
Campaign Summary:
The “EachOneTeachOne – One Child at a Time” offers a 6-month afterschool class in which children will learn basic English and achieve an intermediate level by the end of the program. The Mary K. Yap Foundation aims to have children’s participants learn and utilize English proficiently to improve their opportunities and eventual careers. The earlier we can reach these orphaned children and teach them English, the more likely they will quickly excel. Learning English is crucial for passing university college exams and accessing many global job opportunities for these young children’s future.
“No one shall be left alone from their basic rights to Education,” said Mr. Joseph Joseph, the Mary K. Yap Foundation board member. By providing orphans with trained, proficient English-speaking teachers and mentors, we also aim to allow all vulnerable communities to communicate confidently with the rest of the world. As the Ancient Chinese philosopher and political statesman Kuan Chung said, “If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests.”
