TESTIMONIES

In My Own Words by Bethany

Hello! My name is Bethany, and I am from Pennsylvania, USA.

I’ve been traveling through East & South-East Asia for 12 months. After reading about Myanmar for many years, I wanted to see for myself what it’s like on the ground and to help those in need. Through a simple Google search, I found the Mary K. Yap Foundation, a US-based 501 (c)(3) non-profit, which has been supporting orphanage children for multiple years. After a Zoom call with the Executive Director, Peter Yap (Uncle Pete), we discovered that, although he lives in San Francisco with his family, both he and I would be visiting Yangon at the same time — God’s perfect timing!

When I arrived in Myanmar, Uncle Pete and Meme introduced me to Yangon – Burmese traditional food, Thanaka (the light-colored wood face paste), and even some local friends and Expats.

New Found Friends in Yangon

I was able to come alongside Meme, the master-project-manager, and help launch a new program called Sketch and Hope. There are so many little details that go on behind-the-scenes to make a new program successful; Meme is the best at what she does! Every bit of her is dedicated to these sweet orphans, and she looks after many programs in Myanmar as one of the Orphanage Ambassadors.

“Meme and I were always on the Road”

We launched the Sketch and Hope program at Ga lilee Church & Children’s Home on November 16, 2025. At this home, Pastor Saw and a few family members care for 38 children. The students started the day by sketching their hopes for the future and what they love. There were some doctors, singers, and pharmacists… lots of nature scenes and crosses also.

Children Finishing up Final Touches

First Round of Drawing Done

Greetings with Pastor Saw Outside Compound

A Cheerful Post with the Team

After a delicious biriyani lunch, the artists really took off and showed the students beautiful watercolor techniques. It was fun to see the children create and be exposed to new ways of expressing themselves.

“Whoopla, I’ve done it!”

“I am almost there!”

“Finishing up the details.”

For me, the most memorable part of the day was the worship session after the certificates were distributed. The children, led by their brother Paul alongside brother David playing a simple guitar, all worshiped and praised the Lord, singing songs like “Your Goodness is Running After Me” and “I give You Everything” (as well as a few songs in Burmese). With tears in my eyes, I had to leave the room — overcome with the goodness of God, with the hope and joy He has given to these children, with the faithfulness of Pastor Saw & family to care for these kids, and with His kindness towards me to allow me to be a witness to these things.

All Smiles: Concluding a Successful Annual Inauguration of “Sketch and Hope” Program

The day ended with a little bit of English practice and a lot of hugs. A part of my heart will always live in this little home near Yangon.

I’m so thankful to the Foundation, Uncle Pete, and Meme for a lovely 6 weeks in Yangon; to Pastor Saw & children for welcoming us into their home for this special program; to the professional artists who instructed the technique session; and of course, to my Lord and Savior for giving me life!

Chairman’s Vision for 2026

My vision remains focused on addressing the evolving needs of orphanages with dignity, sustainability, and measurable impact.”

As Chairman of the Mary K. Yap Foundation, I reflect on 2025 as a year where impact became clearly visible through our collective efforts. Following the December 2024 charity movie launch that brought a first-ever cinema experience to over 1,300 children, mostly orphaned youths, we began to observe positive behavioral and emotional changes during our follow-up visits across the first five months of 2025. The children demonstrated increased confidence, social engagement, and joy—clear signs that moments of inclusion and care can create lasting transformation. These observations reaffirmed our conviction that thoughtfully designed experiences play an important role in supporting a child’s emotional and social development.

Throughout 2025, we remained actively engaged in delivering programs that uplifted and empowered children. The successful launches of #SketchandHope and #MelodyofJoy, two of our new social development programs, provided safe platforms for orphaned children to express themselves through art, music, and movement while advancing creativity and self-confidence among themselves. During this same period, we returned to Taungoo, where our Executive Director and our in-country Program Management Team securely and transparently concluded the distribution of remaining funds to affected orphanages from the 2024  Typhoon Yagi Orphan Relief donations.

#SketchandHope Builds Confidence and Creativity

#SketchandHope Sparks Boldness and Determination

A defining achievement of 2025 was the launch of our educational and health development initiatives, #Road2Digital  and #H2OHope. Through #H2OHope, we delivered clean drinking water to 85 children and members of the surrounding community by installing a water treatment and filtration system within the orphanage compound, directly improving daily health and hygiene. Equally significant was the first commencement ceremony under #Road2Digital, where 11 students received certificates after their first experience learning on desktop computers. These milestones reflect our commitment to long-term development and were made possible through the dedication of our Partners of Hope business partners. I could not be prouder of the work than to honor the trust placed in us by our donors and partners in carrying out these life-enriching programs, especially in times of pressing need for improvements within orphanage communities.

Looking ahead to 2026, our priorities are both clear and urgent. We are committed to expanding #H2OHope and #Road2Digital in response to growing needs on the ground. At present, three orphanages require immediate intervention for clean drinking water systems, while four orphanages have formally requested after-school educational support. To meet these needs, we aim to establish E-Learning Centers within orphanage compounds, creating safe and structured environments where children can build digital skills and access meaningful learning opportunities.

The progress achieved over the past two decades is possible when compassion is guided by accountability and sustained partnership. As Chairman, my vision remains focused on addressing the evolving needs of orphanages with dignity, sustainability, and measurable impact. Our responsibilities continue to grow, and with them our commitment to serve with integrity. I extend my sincere gratitude to our donors, partners, and local teams, and I invite continued collaboration as we work together to strengthen communities and build brighter futures for the children we serve.

With respect and gratitude,

My Way to Sketch and Hope

The Mary K. Yap Foundation proudly kickoff its inaugural #SketchandHope program, part of our inspiring “Art Is My Voice” campaign for the underserved children.

On November 16, 2025, the Mary K. Yap Foundation proudly launched its first Sketch and Hope art program at the Galilee Foundation Church and Children’s Home for Orphan Youths in Shwe Pyi Thar, Myanmar—an inspiring milestone in our mission to empower orphaned children through education, creativity, and emotional development.

This inaugural program welcomed 38 children, who spent the day exploring drawing, painting, and imaginative expression under the guidance of distinguished instructors: Artist Than Thar, Artist Han Thar, and Artist May San.

Art is more than a creative activity—it is a powerful tool that helps orphaned and disadvantaged children build confidence, process emotions, and discover their inner strengths. Through color, shapes, and storytelling, children learn to communicate feelings they may not yet have the words to express. Creative exercises strengthen emotional resilience, improve focus, reduce stress, and encourage problem-solving and self-belief. During the program, many children proudly shared their artwork for the first time, demonstrating how an open, supportive environment can unlock courage, curiosity, and hope.

Children taking their first leap of faith in Sketch and Hope

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Pastor Saw Pyae Wa, Founder of the Children Development Center since 2015, for warmly welcoming our team. This marks our third community engagement with Pastor Saw, each one bringing renewed excitement and joy to the children under his care. Meme Lwin, our Orphanage Ambassador, expressed the significance of this return visit, sharing:

Every time we return, the children’s faces light up with recognition and comfort. It shows them that they are not forgotten—our presence reminds them that they are valued, supported, and deeply cherished.”

The Foundation is also deeply grateful to Mr. Christope Felix, a French philanthropist who has lived in Myanmar for more than three decades. His generosity and compassionate presence played a pivotal role in making this milestone possible. We also extend sincere thanks to our Intern Bethany Snyder from Pennsylvania, USA, who traveled to Myanmar with the heartfelt intention of encouraging and inspiring orphaned youth. Reflecting on her experience, Bethany shared,

“I’m getting the hang of this!”

Their smiles reminded me that creativity is a universal language—one that brings hope, healing, and connection no matter where we come from.”

Our appreciation further extends to our three dedicated artists, whose passion and guidance created a nurturing and memorable learning environment for every participant. Their commitment to using art as a bridge to confidence and imagination enriched the entire experience.

This initiative underscores the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—promoting Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and Partnerships for the Goals. The generous funding that powers the Sketch and Hope initiatives is made possible through the cherished support of our friends, family members, and business partners, whose compassion enables the Foundation to respond swiftly to essential needs and expand educational access for children in care.

Welcoming the First Batch of Children from Gailleo home for Orphan Youths

Looking ahead, the Foundation plans to establish a sustainable, ongoing Sketch and Hope learning program at the Galilee Foundation Church and Children’s Home for Orphan Youths, ensuring consistent access to meaningful art education for disadvantaged children. Together, we remain committed to nurturing creativity, unlocking potential, and building opportunities that can transform young lives for generations to come.
