“Few names in Myanmar’s entertainment industry command the admiration and respect of Dr. Grace Swe Zin Htaike.”
San Francisco, CA – Few names in Myanmar’s entertainment industry command the admiration and respect of Dr. Grace Swe Zin Htaike, affectionately known to many as Auntie Grace. With a remarkable career spanning more than five decades and over 200 films, she has become one of Myanmar’s most celebrated actresses and cultural ambassadors. Whether representing Myanmar at international film festivals, advocating for policy reforms and intellectual property rights, speaking at global forums, or mentoring the next generation of artists, Auntie Grace has consistently gone beyond the call of duty. Her name has become synonymous with artistic excellence, cultural leadership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing Myanmar’s creative community on the world stage.

Yet, beyond the spotlight and countless professional achievements lies a compassionate individual whose generosity speaks just as loudly as her accomplishments. As an Orphanage Ambassador for the Mary K. Yap Foundation, Auntie Grace has generously volunteered her time, working alongside our program teams to support meaningful initiatives for orphaned and underprivileged children in Myanmar. Despite her demanding schedule and international commitments, she continues to make herself available whenever her guidance, encouragement, or personal involvement can make a difference. To those fortunate enough to work with her, it is this willingness to give freely of her time, without expecting anything in return, that makes Auntie Grace truly extraordinary.
One unforgettable example of her dedication came during the production of the Foundation’s first charity feature film, Unbroken Ties (Myittar), an award-winning US–Myanmar joint production developed to raise awareness and support for vulnerable children. Serving as the film’s Unit Director, Auntie Grace played an indispensable role in navigating Myanmar’s regulatory requirements, censorship procedures, filming permits, and complex production arrangements. Her experience, relationships, and tireless attention to detail helped our international filmmaking team overcome countless challenges. Simply put, Unbroken Ties would not have reached completion without her extraordinary commitment and hands-on involvement. Her contribution extended far beyond a professional responsibility; it was a labor of love for a cause she deeply believed in.
Auntie Grace’s extraordinary contributions, the Mary K. Yap Foundation’s Executive Director offers a sentiment that captures the admiration felt by so many who know her:
“Auntie Grace reminds us that true greatness is not measured by the awards we receive or the recognition we earn, but by the lives we touch along the way. She has given Myanmar a lifetime of artistic excellence, yet her greatest gift may be the kindness, wisdom, and generosity she continues to share with others.”
That remarkable journey led Auntie Grace to the beautiful Principality of Monaco, where she joined the Mandalay Productions delegation for seven memorable days at the 19th Monaco Charity Film Festival in May 2024. Renowned for its Mediterranean charm, Formula One Grand Prix, and the timeless legacy of Princess Grace Kelly, Monaco provided a fitting international stage to celebrate another remarkable Grace from Myanmar. During the festival, Unbroken Ties (Myittar) received recognition for Best Film and Best Story, marking a proud achievement for the international production team. The evening became even more meaningful when Auntie Grace was honored with the festival’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her decades of contributions to Myanmar’s arts, culture, and entertainment industry. Sharing this special occasion with the filmmaking team was a celebration not only of artistic accomplishment but also of friendship, perseverance, and a shared humanitarian mission.
For the Mary K. Yap Foundation, recognizing Dr. Grace Swe Zin Htaike in our Individual Spotlight series is more than celebrating a legendary artist. It is our heartfelt appreciation for someone who has stood beside our Foundation, supported our children, and consistently demonstrated that compassion has no boundaries. Her remarkable journey reminds us that the most meaningful legacy is not simply what we accomplish in life, but what we leave behind for future generations. Thank you, Auntie Grace, for sharing your extraordinary talents, your generous heart, and your unwavering commitment to making Myanmar a better place for all.
