Delivering Safe and Clean Water

The Foundation recognized the urgent need to provide sustainable water solutions that protect children’s health and well-being.

The Foundation’s Campaign #8 Clean Water H20Hope initiative was born from a simple but powerful purpose: to ensure that every orphanage in Myanmar has access to safe and clean drinking water. In a country where children don’t have similar privileges, the Foundation recognized the urgent need to provide sustainable water solutions that protect children’s health and well-being. H20Hope is not just about installing water systems—it is about empowering communities, protecting children, and giving supporters a way to make a meaningful, tangible impact on young lives.

On December 13, 2025, the Foundation proudly commissioned the first H20Hope system at the Home of Beacon, marking a historic milestone in our efforts. This achievement followed a careful selection process where two qualified bidders were invited to present their experience, project track record, and in-country support capabilities. After a thorough evaluation, the project was awarded to Conway Tech Myanmar, a company with eight years of operations in Myanmar and offices across Cambodia, Laos, and Singapore. Their expertise and reliability gave the Foundation confidence that the project would deliver lasting results for the children.

A comprehensive survey and water quality assessment were conducted on-site to measure critical indicators, including pH levels, lead, and iron content of the well water. These measurements informed the Bill of Quantities and determined the complexity and specifications of the filtration system required. This careful, data-driven approach ensured that every aspect of the system meets the highest safety standards and provides clean water for years to come, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to quality and accountability to its donors.

The installation at Home of Beacon brought immediate benefits to 85 children, most of whom are orphans, providing them with safe, clean drinking water from a 1,000 ml tank system. The commissioning allows children to thrive in a healthier environment, while volunteers, orphanage ambassadors, and supporters witness the tangible results of their contributions. Every sip of water now represents the collective effort of donors and partners coming together to create lasting change in children’s lives.

Clean water is a basic right, yet too many children in Myanmar go without it. H20Hope is our commitment to ensuring that every orphanage can provide safe water for its children. This first commissioning is a testament to what can be achieved when donors, volunteers, and partners come together to make a real difference.”

The success of the December 13th commissioning represents the first step in a nationwide campaign to bring clean drinking water to orphanages across Myanmar. Two years of careful planning, campaign efforts, and fundraising have made this launch possible. Moving forward, the Foundation aims to extend Clean Water H20Hope program to every orphanage in need, ensuring children across the country can enjoy one of the most essential human rights: safe, clean drinking water. With the support of caring donors of friends, family and committed partners, H20Hope intiative promises a brighter, healthier future for Myanmar’s orphan children.

#OrphanRelief for Agape Home

The Mary K. Yap Foundation is delighted to share our ongoing partnership with Agape Child Care Home”

Hlegu, Yangon, Myanmar – Agape Child Care Home is a respected organization that has been serving poor, vulnerable, and fatherless children for more than 25 years in Myanmar. Established with a mission to defend and uplift disadvantaged children, Agape Child Care Home has become a safer haven where love, care, and moral guidance are provided to those who need it most. Located in East Dagon Township, the home nurtures dozens of children who come from challenging family and social circumstances, ensuring they receive not only shelter and nutrition but also emotional and spiritual support that helps them rebuild their sense of belonging and confidence.

Children from Agape Child Care Home

Our collaboration with Agape Child Care Home began in 2024 through the #FirstMovieExperience for Orphaned Children Initiative, one of the Foundation’s flagship programs designed to foster creativity, imagination, and social confidence among children from orphan care communities. During that event, Agape’s children were among the 23 orphanages, totaling more than 1,300 orphaned youths who experienced a day of joy and discovery through film — a project that continues to symbolize our commitment to using creative activities as tools for emotional growth and community building.

The relationship between the Foundation and Agape grew from that experience, forming a foundation of mutual trust and shared vision for empowering the next generation of orphans and vulnerable youth.

Earlier this year in May, the Executive Director of Agape Child Care Home, Mr. K.K. Kap, reached out to the Mary K. Yap Foundation in the midst of a serious emergency situation. The shelter that serves as both the boys’ dormitory and the main dining hall had suffered extensive damage caused by severe wind and heavy rainfall. The roof structure was nearly torn apart, leaving the children dangerously exposed to the elements during Myanmar’s rainy season. At that time, forty-five children were residing in the home — thirty-five boys and ten girls, of whom twenty-four were orphans. The living conditions quickly became unsafe, and the Agape team urgently appealed for immediate support to ensure the children’s health and security.

True to our mission of bringing hope, dignity, and protection to orphaned children, the Mary K. Yap Foundation responded immediately under our Campaign #9 #OrphanRelief Emergency Aid Program. This initiative was created to deliver rapid, practical relief to orphanages and childcare institutions during natural disasters, emergencies, or times of urgent need. The #OrphanRelief campaign was originally launched in September 2024, during the devastating Typhoon Yagi, when the Foundation mobilized emergency assistance to support orphanage communities affected by flooding and property damage. Since then, the campaign has evolved into one of our core humanitarian outreach programs, symbolizing resilience and unity in times of hardship.

Damaged Rooftop where the Children Sleeps

Damaged Floor from the Storm

The Emergency reconstruction work for Agape Child Care Home began on May 24, 2025, with the first phase focusing on replacing the shelter’s damaged rooftop and reinforcing the structure. Once the roof was secured, the project continued with the installation of new flooring, ensuring a safer, cleaner, and more comfortable living environment for the children. The work was successfully completed on June 28, 2025, marking a significant milestone in restoring safety and normalcy to the home. The project site is located in Hlegu Township, approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Yangon, or about a 1.5-hour drive depending on traffic and route. The renovated shelter now provides a secure and dignified space for young, orphaned children, allowing them to dine, study, and sleep peacefully regardless of the weather conditions.

The Foundation generously covered the full cost of materials and labor for this crucial project, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to stand beside orphan care communities whenever they face urgent challenges. Through this impactful act of support, we not only repaired a damaged building but also helped rebuild confidence, safety, and a lasting sense of stability for the children who proudly call Agape their home.

Agape Home Children after the Completion of Rooftop Replacement

Reflecting on the impact of the Foundation’s support, Mr. K.K. Kap, Executive Director of Agape Child Care Home, expressed heartfelt gratitude:

“Your generous donation was such a great help for us, whereby the children are under secure and able to rest with no worry for the leaking roof and the muddy floor.”

At the Mary K. Yap Foundation, we believe that every child deserves safety, care, and the chance to dream without fear. Our work through the #OrphanReliefs Emergency Aid Program continues to provide hope and immediate assistance to orphanages in need across Myanmar, strengthening the social fabric that supports our nation’s most vulnerable youth. The generous funding that powers the #OrphanReliefs initiatives is made possible through the cherished support of our friends, family members, and business partners, whose compassion enables the Foundation to respond swiftly and effectively whenever disaster strikes.

We invite all caring individuals, organizations, and partners to join us in this journey. Your contributions and collaboration can help expand the reach of our #OrphanRelief initiatives, ensuring that no orphaned child is left without shelter, security, or hope. Together, we can continue to bring light and resilience to the lives of those who need it most.

In My Own Words by Teacher Cici

Somehow the miles between us don’t seem to mean as much, when special thoughts, wishes, and encouragements can help us keep in touch.”

Your Loving Teacher Cici

“A cart pulled by two moves smooth steadily and perfectly!  So I’ll begin my autobiography from the time I became a widow with six kids to feed, cloths, and educate.   To be able to make ends sure, I reigned from my school teacher’s job and gave English Language tuition to individuals so that my income would be double up. I never shared my difficulties with them (my kids) fearing that they’ll be upset.  I stood firm and took every burden alone.

I never shared my difficulties with them (my kids) fearing that they’ll be upset.  I stood firm and took every burden alone.  After a day’s fatigue, I’m welcome to fling my whole self into God’s arms, worries anxieties, doubts, questions as well as praises and thanks giving I prayed hard and everything went according to plan.  All my troubles are small compared to the Lord’s infinite wisdom and power so I must admit that God was my one and only supporter to help me walk my tedious journey.  As times passed, my kids too were educated to be able to earn a living for themselves.

#God is great to live in comfort about the high house rents, my company chairman were I was teaching English Language to his staff.  He gave me a bonus and that was how I bought a house.  I trusted the Lord with all my heart and soul.  I’m now 88 years old, still hail and hearty, active and physically fit to continue my teaching.  My duty towards my kids are over, I have one unmarried daughter living with me at present.  I have 13 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.  I prayed and prayed to God to show me how I should serve for him.

Apart from my teaching with pay, I’m doing a charitable job by teaching 10 orphans.  I should say 1 or 3 are fatherless and some are motherless and can’t afford to educate or feed. I’m teaching them free of charge. They attend the State School. My English speaking course will be an addition to the studies for their future.

I have served God in many ways I taught the Sunday school kids. When mothers from the districts came to attend a bible study course, I gave them an English Language Course also for youths who was training to be vicars from various towns in Myanmar attending a religious seminar. I included my English Language course to sum up.  I’m ready to serve the Lord in any kind of situation fit for my age.

Serenitee Yap visits Myittamon

A Homecoming of the Heart: Serenitee Yap’s Christmas Visit to the Orphanage

Hwabi, Yangon, Myanmar – We are overjoyed to share the heartfelt visit of Serenitee Ayobamidele Yap, who returned from San Francisco this Christmas season for a deeply meaningful reunion with one of the orphanage communities she has long represented as a Children’s Orphanage Ambassador with the Foundation. After eight years of living in Yangon, Serenitee’s return was a personal journey and a decisive moment of reconnection with the children who had always held a special place in her heart since her first visit to Myittamone Orphanage when she was 11.  Accompanied by her fellow Ambassador Meme Lwin, Serenitee arrived at Myittarmone in the early afternoon, warmly greeted by the joyful smiles of the girls. What followed was an unforgettable day of bonding, laughter, and heartfelt exchanges that brought a sense of unity and compassion to everyone involved.

Serenitee, Ambassador Meme, and Myittarmon Girls

Throughout the day, Serenitee and Meme immersed themselves in the orphanage’s vibrant rhythm—singing classic Christmas songs with the children, taking quiet time-outs for personal conversations, and sparking inspiration through music. Serenitee shared her passion for the piano, explaining how its melodies became a source of comfort and creativity during her upbringing. With tenderness and patience, she offered the girls their first piano lessons, leaving behind the basics of music theory and the belief that beauty and expression can be found even in the simplest of keys. Her gentle encouragement filled the room with excitement and curiosity, leaving a lasting impression on the children who had never seen a piano played up close before by a person who had grown up playing piano since the age of 5.

The experience extended far beyond music and festivities. Serenitee was deeply moved by the behind-the-scenes realities of daily life at the orphanage, especially in the cooking area, where meals are prepared using traditional methods. She admired as the sisters stirred a massive rice pot over a wood fire, the smoky air carrying the aroma of a meal prepared with love and devotion. It was a powerful contrast to the fast-paced lifestyle of the West and gave Serenitee new insight into the strength, resilience, and simplicity that define the children’s everyday experiences. She took the time to learn about the girls’ routines, appreciating the discipline and care involved in every part of their day.

As night fell, the girls gathered in a large circle before bedtime, a cherished tradition of the Foundation where every orphaned child is asked to share stories, hopes, and dreams. That evening, they requested Serenitee to talk about her life growing up in the United States—a moment filled with emotion, laughter, and reflection. Serenitee’s stories reminded them that connection and understanding are always possible, even across oceans and vastly different circumstances. Hosted by Sister Mary Sagaya and supported by four dedicated sisters from the Archdiocese of Yangon, the orphanage radiates warmth, care, and commitment. In Serenitee’s words, “Being here tonight reminds me that love knows no boundaries, and hope can be nurtured anywhere—especially when we listen, share, and believe in one another.” Her visit was not just a holiday homecoming but a powerful reminder of the bonds that tie us together, no matter where we are.

A Heartwarming XMas Visit

From Los Angeles to Yangon: A Heartwarming Holiday Visit with Myanmar’s Orphaned Girls

Hwabi, Yangon, Myanmar – Just three days before the most celebrated holiday in the world, the Mary K. Yap Foundation had the heartfelt privilege of visiting Myittarmone Orphanage in Hwabi, Yangon—one of our longest-standing partners, home to over 70 young girls, most of whom are orphans. Spending a day at the orphanage during Christmas week is truly priceless, especially when our visit is led by an army of passionate volunteers whose only mission is to spread love, joy, and laughter. The energy and warmth shared throughout the day made it one of the season’s most unforgettable moments for everyone involved.

Actor Gin Mung at Myittamone Orphanage

This special visit came with delightful surprises that uplifted the spirits of the children in ways words cannot fully describe. Flying in from Los Angeles, Unbroken Ties lead actor Gin Mung and his gracious wife, Cing Cing, made a surprise appearance that drew cheers and smiles from the children. They were joined by Serenitee Ayobamidele Yap, the talented voice behind the film’s original score, adding an extra spark of inspiration. The Foundation’s Executive Director, Peter K. Yap, alongside Orphanage Ambassador Meme Lwin and a dedicated team of eight volunteers, brought a sense of family and celebration to every corner of the orphanage.

In partnership with Unilever, our generous corporate donor, the Foundation provided essential household items such as toothpaste and shampoo—small things that make a big difference in daily life. We also brought freshly prepared rice plates and sweet desserts for all the girls to enjoy, adding a comforting touch to the festivities. Throughout the day, the children engaged in various team games, dancing activities, and lighthearted competitions that created a vibrant and joyful atmosphere, echoing the spirit of Christmas.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day came during small group sessions, where volunteers sat with the girls, divided into groups of eight, to talk about their dreams and aspirations. Each girl shared what she hopes to become when she finishes her studies, whether a teacher, doctor, singer, or artist. These heart-to-heart conversations reminded us of the power of hope and the importance of nurturing dreams. It was a day filled with celebration, connection, and compassion that captured the essence of giving during the holiday season.

Finding Strength on Father’s Day

Commentary: Finding Strength on Father’s Day By Serenitee Ayobamidele Yap

#As Father’s Day 2022 approached, I was reminded of the old saying, “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” It’s a phrase many of us take to heart, often recalling the strength, wisdom, and silent sacrifices of the men who helped shape our lives. Traditionally, fathers are seen as protectors—pillars of strength who stand as heroes in their children’s eyes. For many, this special day in June is filled with heartfelt messages, backyard gatherings, and moments of gratitude. Yet, amid all the joy and celebration, there’s a silent population whose stories rarely make it to the surface—children without fathers.

It’s easy to forget how deep a father’s influence runs until it’s absent. For children growing up in loving homes, a father’s presence often sets the tone for discipline, moral compass, and emotional grounding. But for orphans—especially those who lost their fathers due to illness, war, poverty, or abandonment—Father’s Day can bring a wave of complex emotions. What does it feel like to have no memory of the man who was meant to protect you? To lack a role model who would have taught you how to stand tall in a world that often overlooks your pain? Orphaned children face this harsh reality every day. Without a father figure to look up to, many grow up feeling emotionally incomplete, carrying a void that no celebration can fill.

Fatherless Baby in Arms of our Foundation’s E.D. 2017′

These children are often left to navigate the world without the guidance that could have helped shape their values or ambitions. The absence of that foundational relationship can lead to challenges in building self-confidence, forming goals, and trusting others. It’s not just the loss of a parent—it’s the loss of direction, identity, and safety.

As the rest of the country celebrates Father’s Day with cards and cookouts, let it also be a day to remember those who grieve in silence. Let us honor the memory of fathers who are no longer with us by standing beside the children they left behind. These children may never have the chance to hand their father a card or thank him in person, but we, as a society, can step in with love, mentorship, and support. This Father’s Day, may we extend our compassion beyond our own families and recognize the orphaned children who deserve to be seen, heard, and uplifted—today and every day.

Orphan Care Ambassadors

Corporate News Feature: The Purpose and Impact of the Orphanage Ambassador Program

#In January 2023, the Mary K. Yap Foundation proudly launched its Orphanage Ambassador Program as part of a strategic effort to expand the Foundation’s global mission—advancing the well-being of orphaned children worldwide. The program was designed to empower passionate individuals with a platform to serve as voices for orphans and become active participants in their development. At its core, the initiative reflects the Foundation’s belief that everyone can make a difference by contributing time, compassion, and care. Often, society underestimates the potential of orphaned children, but through meaningful engagement, we see how supportive interactions can inspire resilience, growth, and transformation.

Orphanage Ambassadors harbor a vital role in championing the Foundation’s mission. They serve not only as representatives but also as mentors and advocates who directly engage with orphaned children in their local communities and abroad. By visiting orphanages, offering encouragement, and supporting day-to-day needs, these ambassadors foster environments where orphaned youth are treated with the same love and attention as children raised in traditional family settings. Their presence is a powerful reminder that these children are not forgotten—they are valued, cared for, and capable of thriving when given proper support.

#The program requires each ambassador to participate in at least two Foundation-sponsored charity events per year, whenever and wherever possible. But more than meeting this requirement, ambassadors are deeply involved in forming lasting bonds with both the children and the communities they serve. Whether giving empowerment talks, leading fun and educational activities, or simply offering a listening ear, they help instill confidence and hope in children who may otherwise feel alone. Their involvement strengthens the bridge between the Foundation and the orphanage communities, reinforcing trust and continuity in the children’s lives.

Today, the Orphanage Ambassador Program has grown to include 16 dedicated ambassadors from 12 different countries—each bringing unique perspectives and energy to our mission. Their collective efforts reflect the spirit of global unity in supporting orphaned children and ensuring they are seen, heard, and uplifted. The Mary K. Yap Foundation remains committed to growing this program and expanding its reach, knowing that every ambassador contributes to a brighter, more compassionate future for children who need it most. Through their work, the Foundation continues to advance its vision: that every orphan, regardless of their origin or circumstance, deserves a chance to live, dream, and succeed.

TESTIMONIES

I am an Orphan, but not alone

My name is Teophine. I am an orphan at the Myittamone Orphanage for eleven years. I am now 16 years old.

I have known about the Mary K. Yap Foundation for seven years now. They always visit us not only during the Christmas season but also throughout the years. I feel happy and excited when I know they will call us because there will always be games and activities when they come to our orphanage. Over the years, the foundation provided us with much food and nourishment. They offered rice bags, food plates, energy snacks, and drinking water. I especially enjoy the chicken rice plates and sweet iced dessert. They also provided us with needed things for academics, like stationery, pens, pencils, books, and computer equipment.

We enjoyed different activities to improve our learning experience. The foundation team prepared fun networking games, and magic shows on one of their earlier visits. They taught us the English language that we could use during our daily conversations. As an orphan, I sometimes feel sad and alone, but whenever Mary K. Yap Foundation visits us, my sadness is gone because their team of volunteers always fills our hearts with joy and love. We do not feel alone whenever their people visit us because they are like a family. We feel warm and motivated, especially when they give us inspiration that we can use for self-motivation.

Every Christmas season, they have an event called “One Stuff Animal Project.” This program was created several years ago and is held every year combined with the foundation’s Christmas celebration. They prepared the event in detail to be with us. They always have something new to share, like new activities, stories, and card games. It is truly fun and exciting to be with them.

#

What I like the most about their visits is that they engaged with the children in every game so that we would not be shy. We felt like we always had someone to depend on when they were at the orphanage.  We felt like they loved us and cared for us! I could not thank them enough for their time and generosity. They also give us one stuffed toy animal to hug and play with daily. The toy animal gift was a souvenir that I will always treasure, especially during my sleeping hours. It is so cuddly! This is really a wonderful experience for us, and I hope they can organize more fun events. I am looking forward to those lifetime moments to cherish!
